Dogs in Movies

When it comes to the movies, many of the directors and writers are beginning to and have in the past used big dogs.

Many of the movies that are well known or even those that are not that big of hits have used larges dogs such as the Mastiff, Great Danes, etc. However, in most of the movies the dogs are portrayed as being very mean and vicious; but actually the dogs are very gentle, loving, and loyal animals.

Killer English Mastiff in Sandlot movie

In 1993, the movie The Sandlot was introduced to the public. In the movie, the kids were afraid of hitting a homerun with a baseball because of a “killer” English Mastiff that was named The Beast. The dog was played by the famous Hercules. Hercules is the world’s largest and heaviest dog. Then later on in 2005, Hercules was back in the sequel The Sandlot 2.

Another very famous movie that has an English Mastiff in it is Harry Potter. In the movie Harry Potter, the mastiff is also portrayed as a deadly and very ferocious dog but yet gentle at the same time. Along with it being mean, it also has 3 heads! Of course, that is only in the movie!!

Carlo, whom is another famous English Mastiff, was also famous for being in the movies as well. In fact, Carlo’s most famous role as a movie dog was in The Adventure of the Copper Beeches; a Sherlock Holmes movie.

St. Bernards in Movies

Besides there being movies with English Mastiffs, you may also see other breeds of dogs in movies as well. In fact, you will also see St. Bernard dogs in some movies as well. In fact, one of the most famous movies that have St. Bernard’s in is Beethoven 1-5. Also, there are other movies as well as TV series that included a St. Bernard in the cast. Some of the movies and series are: Cujo (a thriller by Stephan King), Barry of the Great St. Bernard (a 1977 Disney movie), George, and also animated TV series.

Along with the English Mastiff and the St. Bernard, the Great Dane is also seen in many movies as well. In fact, one of the most known movies that have a Great Dane is the famous Scooby-Doo. Besides Scooby-Doo, there are many other movies that have Great Danes in them. In fact, some of the movies are 1) the 1988 Disney’s Oliver & Company (Einstein is the dog), The Patriot (Mars & Jupiter), Disney’s The Swiss Family Robinson (Duke and Turk-they end up fighting off a tiger), and among many others is New Era-Valentino from the movie “Good Boy!”

As you see, just because the dogs are big, really big does not mean that they can’t do anything. In fact, they are so great that they were able to be in movies and on TV!
